I have used the El Cerrito Fitness Center since it first opened over a year ago. My motivation to do Pilates started with several episodes of sciatica over 20 years ago. I believe that I have avoided back surgery from this work. I worked at UCSF Medical Center and have reviewed many medical records for all types of diseases in research projects. Although retired, I still tend to sit at a computer for too long. Pilates is the only exercise that I have been able to stick with and it’s been about 15 years in total!!!
I recently had another incident of nerve involvement from repetitive movements and poor posture in computer work. Again, it was extremely painful—-this time involving my shoulder, back and tingling in my hand. June has an arsenal of terrific outside practioners to refer to when the need goes beyond Pilates. So, three of us worked together to heal the acute phase of my condition and I continue with June to strengthen the remaining weak muscles. I am thrilled to report that this recent episode was alleviated in less than a third the time of the first sciatic events and with almost no pain medication. It’s more than resolving the pain, it’s correcting the body mechanics.
June is extremely flexible and enjoyable to work with. June’s skill with Neurokinetic Therapy helps to specifically identify imbalanced muscle and movement patterns of inhibition and overcompensation. She created an exercise plan specific to my needs that I can do on my own or with her at the studio. At 68, I am amazed at the joint flexibility and strength that I enjoy from doing Pilates.

I started attending Pilates at El Cerrito Fitness after I had my baby. My abs were a mess, and I had done some research that Pilates can help bring everything back together literally:) I was excited to see that El Cerrito Fitness offered a post natal course with an instructor that was educated in diastatis recti repair. In all I attended Pilates for 6 months 1 time per week and my stomach no longer has a separation. My trainer, Christina was so knowledgeable, and I am so lucky to have worked with her. After having a baby you really feel like things are never going to go back the way it was before, and Christina cheered me on every step of the way. My only regret is that I wish I would have attended their prenatal Pilates. I’ve been having private sessions (with Nathan) and taking classes at the studio over a year and a half. June runs a wonderfully friendly, well-organized studio with a great variety of classes and trainers, all centered around solid Pilates and good technique. Which is important: not all Pilates is done equally well or with the care and attention to detail that is necessary to get the real benefits of Pilates. Nathan is particularly good with rehabilitating injuries and reducing pain through re-training proper form and function. Easy location, lots of parking, fun place to do Pilates!

I’ve been working with June for about a month, and after a 2 week break (vacation), I’m looking forward to going back! I got a pre-paid personal training package (which I highly recommend – good value) with June, and she’s been amazing. I’m totally new to Pilates, and was motivated after having a particularly bad episode of back muscle spasms. June gets on the floor with me and does the stretches/mat exercises with me, which is fun, and has guided me through the reformer stuff expertly. She pays close attention to my feedback, making adjustments where necessary, gives me “homework” (nice!) and takes notes. I’ve discovered, thanks to June, whole problem areas that I didn’t even know, and I feel much better. She absolutely teaches proper form, and it’s emphasized, which I appreciate very much. She’s happy to tell you the anatomical details and reasons why we’re doing what we do, which I also like a lot. PLUS, June is really sweet, personable and a great teacher! The whole experience has been eye-opening, and more of a workout than I realized it could be, even having to go gently, in my case. It’s a small but very nice studio, with all the equipment you could possibly need. I look forward to more personal attention, and I look forward to trying the group mat classes as well. BIG thumbs up!

I found El Cerrito Personal Traning and Pilates quite by accident, right near my local shopping spots on San Pablo near Moeser. Even better, it is quiet and respectful at instructor as well as user level.
I was fortunate that my Pilates teacher Anna had an open spot in her schedule this Spring.
Now, after 3 months, I can really feel the benefit of getting my body in tune at age 60 after a lifetime of too much driving and entrained stress; so ready now for my next arc of life. Anna is both experienced and very well informed. Her knowledge of the body, and the value of patience in correcting long-time habits, have in turn made me more patient with my own exercise program.
